Job Title: Associate Automation Designer

A leading provider of custom scenic fabrication, automation and painted scenery for the live entertainment industry is seeking an Associate Automation Designer. This role focuses on implementing automation and control systems and software across a range of production environments.

Key Responsibilities

Support clients and technicians using in house motion control systems in both new and existing installations, in shop and onsite.

Assist with testing, troubleshooting, configuring, commissioning, maintaining and repairing motion control systems and hardware.

Collaborate with external designers, technical teams and clients, and work closely with internal departments to integrate automated effects into full productions.

Design mechanical winches, lifts and other forms of theatrical machinery.

Adapt existing stock machine designs for new uses or installations.

Design and specify electrical control systems.

Develop and maintain control and interface software.

Produce shop and installation drawings for mechanical and electrical systems.

Order materials and components.

Coordinate with fabrication teams to ensure timely, accurate construction and maintain high quality standards.

Maintain show specific automation documentation to support proper deployment and field operations.

Create and update as built documentation and operation and maintenance manuals.

Qualifications

Three or more years of experience in professional theatre or the entertainment industry. A technical production degree is a plus.

Experience with theatrical motion control systems, industrial control software and industrial controls.

Proficiency with TCP/IP networking; fieldbus experience such as EtherCAT or CANOpen is advantageous.

Proficiency with IEC 61131 3 PLC programming languages; familiarity with Beckhoff TwinCAT hardware and software is a plus.

Proficiency with Microsoft Windows, Office suite and AutoCAD (Electrical is a plus). Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite applications is also a plus.

Knowledge of NEC, UL 508 and NFPA 70E. Familiarity with IEC functional safety standards is an advantage.

Additional Details

This full time role offers a strong benefits package and competitive hourly pay. Standard operating hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30am to 3:30pm, with overtime as needed. Employment is tied to active and anticipated project workload.
